PURRA X300S: setting your diffuser without an app

Yes: a fragrance diffuser can be set without an app. On the PURRA X300S, the 34 cm column that covers 100 m², the three intensities and the 1, 2, 4 or 8 hour timer are operated from the touch interface on the base. The app only serves the day-by-day scheduled time slots.

A standalone diffuser is a device whose everyday settings are all made on the object itself, with no phone required to switch it on, change its intensity or give it a stop time. That is the definition that matters when buying, because it decides what happens on the day the owner is away, the phone battery is flat, or nobody simply feels like installing anything. The question comes up again and again when choosing a premium fragrance diffuser, and the answer differs from one device to the next.

Key points:

Can a fragrance diffuser be set without an app?

A cold nebulisation diffuser can be set without an app as soon as its maker has provided a physical control on the device. Three settings are enough for daily use: switching on, the intensity level, and the time after which the device stops by itself. Those three controls sit on the base of the PURRA X300S.

The useful distinction is therefore not between a connected device and one that is not. It runs between two families of settings. On one side the use settings, the ones you touch when walking into a room, which must stay reachable with a single gesture and no screen. On the other side the programming settings, the ones you set once and almost never touch again.

A well designed device puts the first on the object and leaves the second to the phone. A poorly designed device puts everything in the app, and becomes unusable for anyone who has not installed it.

Which settings are made directly on the PURRA X300S?

On the PURRA X300S, the touch interface on the base controls switching on, moving from one intensity to the next, and choosing a timer position among 1 h, 2 h, 4 h and 8 h. The device leaves its box in standalone mode: it diffuses from the very first power-up, with no account to create, no home network and no subscription.

The base of the PURRA X300S carries no protruding button: the controls are touch sensitive, built into the foot of the aluminium column.

This is something you judge badly in a shop and very well at home. A device placed in an entrance hall is touched by everyone who walks past: the partner who finds it too strong, the person who cleans and would rather switch it off while working, the friend who looks after the flat for a week. None of them has the app, and none of them has any reason to install it.

PURRA is a French brand of home fragrance diffusers using cold nebulisation, a diffusion without water and without heat named PureFlow™, available in six scent refills inspired by grand hotels. Across the whole range, from the portable model to the floor-standing column, the rule is the same: the device stands on its own.

Three intensities: what really changes between I, II and III

The three intensities of a nebulisation diffuser do not change the strength of the mist but the length of the pause between two bursts. On the PURRA X300S, intensity I diffuses for 15 seconds then pauses for 200 seconds, intensity II for 15 seconds then 100 seconds, intensity III for 15 seconds then 60 seconds. The mist is intermittent by design.

The pause is what makes the result. Continuous diffusion saturates the sense of smell and ends up not being perceived at all, the olfactory adaptation that anyone who no longer smells their own home will recognise. Diffusion in cycles gives the nose time to rest, and the scent keeps being perceived instead of fading into the olfactory background.

For 100 m², intensity II is the sensible starting point, with the option of dropping to I once the nose has grown used to the room. The right level is the one you no longer notice when walking in, and it is always found by trial: our guide to setting the intensity room by room explains the method.

The PURRA C30 has no connectivity at all: it is set only on the device, and that is exactly why it travels well. The PURRA X300S is available to pre-order, shipping from 15 November 2026, with a free refill. Prices read on purra.fr on 8 October 2026.

Timer and battery life: what the device handles without a phone

A diffuser's timer answers one simple question: how long to diffuse before stopping by itself. The four positions of the PURRA X300S, 1 h, 2 h, 4 h and 8 h, cover the four real situations, from the hour before guests arrive to the 8 hours of a living room used all day.

The 8 h position is not arbitrary: it is exactly the basis on which PURRA states all its durations. A 100 ml Signature Refill lasts 625 operating hours on intensity I, 400 hours on II and 200 hours on III, which works out at roughly 78, 50 and 25 days if you diffuse 8 hours a day. Increasing the daily time shortens the gap between two fills in the same proportion, and that is the whole calculation.

On the energy side, the 10,000 mAh lithium battery is rated at 293 hours of diffusion on intensity I at full charge, 146 hours on II and 88 hours on III, which is roughly 36 days on the gentle setting, on that same basis of 8 hours of diffusion per day. The manufacturer states around 6 hours for a full charge, and the device diffuses while plugged in: in a fixed spot, the simplest thing is to leave it on its cable. That battery life matters in a home used only now and then, the case we set out in our article on the gift for a holiday home.

Standing on a console, the device is set with your fingers: the gesture anyone living in the home can make, whether they own the phone or not.

What the app adds, and what it does not replace

The PURRA app, currently being released, brings one single thing the device cannot do on its own: day-by-day time slots, with different start and end times from Monday to Sunday. It also controls intensity remotely, but that control already exists on the base.

The connection opens and closes on demand. A long press of three seconds on the M button puts the column into Bluetooth mode, and the same long press brings it back to standalone mode. Nothing stays paired against the owner's wishes, and only one phone is connected at a time.

For a flat, this fine scheduling is a comfort. For a boutique, a practice or a unit closed at the weekend, it is a real gain: you resume diffusion an hour before opening rather than letting the device run into an empty room. But that is the only ground on which the phone becomes necessary. Everything else, including the maintenance step described in our article on changing scent without mixing, is done on the device, bottle in hand.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a smartphone to use a premium fragrance diffuser?

No. On the PURRA X300S, the device leaves its box in standalone mode: the touch interface on the base controls switching on, the three intensities and the timer of 1 h, 2 h, 4 h or 8 h. No account, no subscription and no home network are needed.

The phone only comes in to schedule different time slots depending on the day of the week. That is a setting you make once and almost never touch again, whereas intensity is corrected far more often. A device whose everyday controls live only inside an app becomes unusable as soon as the owner is away.

What exactly do you lose by never using your diffuser's app?

One single thing: the day-by-day scheduled time slots, meaning different start and end times from Monday to Sunday. Everything else stays on the device, namely on, off, the three intensities and the four timer positions, 1 h, 2 h, 4 h and 8 h.

In practice, a household that diffuses every day at the same rhythm loses nothing at all: a timer position reproduces the same result every day. Hourly scheduling earns its keep when the rhythm changes from one day to the next, for instance a shop closed on Sunday or an office used from Monday to Friday.

Does a premium diffuser need updates to keep working?

No. A cold nebulisation diffuser is a mechanical and electrical device: a pump, a nozzle, a 10,000 mAh battery and a controller that counts 15 seconds of mist then a pause of 60 to 200 seconds depending on intensity. Those functions depend on no software installed on a phone.

This is a difference in kind from objects whose everyday operation runs through an online service. Here the app is a convenience added to an already complete device, not the condition of its use. The two-year legal guarantee of conformity covers the device, whatever way you choose to control it.

Can a diffuser's timer be set directly on the device?

Yes on the models that carry a timer control. The PURRA X300S offers four positions, 1 h, 2 h, 4 h and 8 h, reachable from the touch interface on the base. Once the chosen time is up, the device stops by itself, with no phone involved.

Be careful, positions differ from one model to another inside the same range: the portable 10 m² model offers 1 h, 8 h and 24 h, durations designed for a car cabin and a desk. So check the positions actually available on the page of the model you are interested in rather than assuming they are identical everywhere.

Does Bluetooth mode stay permanently active on a connected diffuser?

No, it is switched on and off on demand. On a column with a touch interface, a long press of three seconds on the M button puts the device into Bluetooth mode, and the same long press of three seconds brings it back to standalone mode. Only one phone is connected at a time.

This is the right reflex when lending out your home, passing the device on or changing phone: you go back to standalone mode and the device becomes operable by anyone, with their fingers. Nothing is lost on the way, since the intensity and timer controls stay the same in both modes.

Do you need to explain how the device works to the person you give it to?

Very little. A standalone diffuser comes down to three gestures: switch on, cycle through the three intensities, choose a timer position among 1 h, 2 h, 4 h and 8 h. The manual supplied in the box is enough, and nothing needs installing before the first mist.

When giving a gift this is a real argument, because a connected object often worries people before it is even unwrapped. Here the person switches it on and it works; they will discover the app later if they feel like it. Just mention that the mist takes about a minute to appear on first use, the time the circuit needs to prime.

If you are looking for a device that stays operable by everyone living in the room, the PURRA X300S and its touch controls cover 100 m² without asking anything of your phone.
