Commercial space smells musty: what to do?

9 October 2026 · PURRA

Local professionnel vide et fermé, salle aux murs de miroirs sans personne, la situation d un local professionnel qui sent le renfermé au retour du week-end

A commercial space that smells musty is fixed with a diffusion rhythm rather than a high intensity setting: you restart the fragrance before opening, not after. On a surface of up to 100 m², the PURRA X300S covers the volume and runs on scheduled time slots, weekends included.

Mustiness is the background odour a closed volume takes on when its air has not been renewed while its materials keep releasing into it. In a shop or an office closed from Friday evening to Monday morning, nobody opens a window, nobody moves through the room, and it is the first customer through the door who notices, long before the team does.

Key points:

  • The PURRA X300S covers up to 100 m² and runs on scheduled time slots: it restarts on its own before opening, with nobody on site.
  • The right setting is judged by walking in from outside, never from inside: the team no longer smells what the customer smells.
  • A 100 ml refill lasts 625 operating hours on intensity I and 400 hours on II, which is roughly 78 and 50 days on a basis of 8 hours of diffusion per day.
  • A diffuser covers an odour, it does not remove it: the source and ventilation always come first.
  • A stockroom or back office under 10 m² belongs to the portable format, not to the room model.

What happens to the air in a commercial space closed for two days?

In a commercial space closed for two days, the air stops being renewed while the materials keep releasing: textiles, carpet, stock boxes, the wood of the furniture, kitchen or cleaning product residues. The Monday odour therefore does not come from something spilled on Saturday, it comes from the build-up of what ventilation and footfall carried away on working days.

Three factors add up in a space that closes. Mechanical ventilation is often tied to opening hours and stops with the shutter. The heating drops, relative humidity rises, and cold surfaces hold on to more. Finally, windowless volumes, stockroom, toilets, plant room, have no fresh air supply of their own and release their load as soon as the door opens.

This mechanism is exactly the one at work in an empty home, with one difference: in a commercial space, the person who notices is not the one who works there, it is the one who comes in to buy. The same phenomenon in a home is described in detail in our article on a house that smells musty.

Why airing out on Monday morning is not always enough

Airing a space on Monday morning renews the air but changes nothing about what loaded it: the materials start releasing again as soon as the windows close, and a door rarely stays open once the first customers arrive. Airing therefore treats the episode of the day, not the cycle that repeats it every week.

The usual answers each have their limit in use. A room spray lays down a surface odour instead of diffusing, and its effect stops with the gesture. A reed diffuser works by capillary action and evaporation in open air, so with no control over intensity or timing. A scented candle only works while the wick burns, and it is excluded anyway from a space left unattended.

One difficulty remains, specific to workplaces: olfactory adaptation. A team that spends its working day in the space stops perceiving its background odour, then judges it non-existent. The method we recommend at PURRA is the one in our manuals: make the first setting with someone who walks in from outside and says what they smell. The right setting is the one you no longer notice on the way in.

Which diffuser for a commercial space under 100 m²?

A retail or office space under 100 m² is covered by a single tabletop unit: the PURRA X300S is rated for 100 m², runs at 40 dB at most according to its manufacturer, and sits on a reception console or a counter.

PURRA, a French brand of home fragrance diffusers using cold nebulisation, offers four diffusers and six scent refills, the portable format covering 10 m² and the floor-standing column 180 m².

Cold nebulisation atomises the composition into dry micro-droplets, with no added water and no heat. The practical consequence in a commercial space: no tank to fill, no limescale, no condensation on a counter, and no maintenance contract to sign. The only operating step is replacing the refill.

Prices read on the store on the day this article was written. Beyond 100 m², a lobby or an open floor leaves this model's range and calls for the floor-standing column rated for 180 m², a case covered in our guide to professional ambient fragrance.

Diffuse during the closure, or only before reopening?

Diffusing at full output while the space is closed serves nobody: no nose is on site to enjoy it, and the refill is consumed for nothing. The useful answer is a scheduled restart before opening, so that the fragrance is in place when the door opens, rather than still settling in when the customer is already there.

On the PURRA X300S, that restart is set through time slots in the PURRA app, currently being published, which controls intensity and day by day time slots: the model printed in the manual is diffusion from 8 am to 8 pm and nothing at night, and nothing stops you giving Saturday and Sunday a different setting from the rest of the week. Without the app, the unit keeps its four timer positions, 1 h, 2 h, 4 h and 8 h, which you trigger on arrival.

Time slots are set once: the unit restarts on its own before opening, including after a weekend closure.

Leaving the unit plugged in is the safest choice in a space you lock up, since it diffuses while it is powered. Its 10,000 mAh battery stays a backup: at full charge it lasts 293 operating hours on intensity I, 146 hours on II and 88 hours on III, which is roughly 36 days on the gentle setting on a basis of 8 hours of diffusion per day. On fragrance consumption, a 100 ml refill lasts 625 operating hours on intensity I, 400 hours on II and 200 hours on III, which is roughly 78, 50 and 25 days on that same basis of 8 hours of diffusion per day. Setting the unit on its own, without a phone, is covered in our article on adjusting a diffuser without the app.

Reopening a commercial space in four steps, on Monday morning

Reopening a space properly takes four steps, in this order, and the order counts as much as the steps: you never scent air you have not renewed first. The sequence holds for a shop, a practice, a workshop or a shared office.

  1. Open up and get the air moving through. Two opposite openings beat a single large one: it is the cross draught that shifts the volume, not the open surface.
  2. Take out whatever has been sitting there. Bins, damp boxes, linen, leftovers from Friday's break, sponges and cloths. That is the source, and no fragrance replaces it.
  3. Restart diffusion at the intensity of the space. The published guidance for 100 m² is to start on intensity II, 15 seconds of mist then 100 seconds of pause, then adjust once the day is under way.
  4. Judge by stepping out, then back in. Ten paces outside and back: it is the only reliable check, because the nose of whoever stayed inside measures nothing any more.

A seasonal space, or one closed for several weeks, follows the same reasoning one notch further: the case of places that stay empty between two occupations is covered in our article on the holiday home.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth scenting a space that only opens five days out of seven?

The cost does not depend on opening days but on diffusion hours. A 100 ml refill at €24.90 lasts 625 operating hours on the gentle setting, which is roughly 78 days on a basis of 8 hours of diffusion per day: a space closed two days a week simply uses less of it.

The unit itself is a one-off purchase, €199.90 for the model rated for 100 m², price read on the store on the day of writing. On the other hand, no PURRA measurement puts a figure on an effect on sales, and we do not claim otherwise. What can be observed is the first impression at opening.

Should you order refills at the same time as the unit for a commercial space?

It is the simplest way, and it avoids a second shipping charge. Delivery is free from €49 in France, Switzerland and Monaco, and a diffuser at €199.90 clears that threshold on its own: adding a 100 ml Signature Refill at €24.90 therefore changes nothing about shipping.

A scent refill already comes with every diffuser: the unit is usable on arrival. Ordering the next one in advance mainly avoids running dry on an evening when the space reopens the following day. Shipping leaves within 24 to 48 hours.

What becomes of the unit if the space changes activity or closes?

It moves. A home fragrance diffuser is tied neither to the walls nor to a contract: no maintenance contract is sold or imposed, there is no water tank and no limescale, and the model rated for 100 m² simply sits somewhere else, in another space or at home.

The 2-year legal guarantee of conformity follows the unit. Refills are ordered individually, with no subscription. And an unused unit, in its original packaging, can be returned within 14 days, with return shipping remaining at the buyer's expense.

Battery or mains power for a diffuser in a space you lock up?

Mains power, because a closed space has nobody to plug the unit back in. The PURRA X300S diffuses while it is powered, and its 10,000 mAh battery then serves only as a backup: at full charge it lasts 293 operating hours on intensity I, which is roughly 36 days on a basis of 8 hours of diffusion per day.

The battery keeps its value for a trade show stand, a pop-up window display or a zone with no socket. For a space you lock up, a USB-C cable left in place remains the safest solution: the unit does not stop because nobody was there to charge it on Sunday.

Should intensity be set differently in an empty space and an occupied one?

Yes, and not in the direction you would expect. An empty space dilutes nothing: door shut, no movement, the mist stays where it is released. An occupied space sees its door open constantly. The published guidance for 100 m² is to start on intensity II, then adjust.

The three intensities of a model rated for 100 m² differ by the pause and not by the amount of mist: 200 seconds of pause on I, 100 on II, 60 on III, for 15 seconds of mist each cycle. The pause is what makes the result, since continuous diffusion ends up no longer being perceived. In a space closed for two days, intensity II at reopening then a return to I once the day is under way is an honest setting.

In what order should you proceed when a room smells bad?

In this order: remove the source, air the room, then scent it. A diffuser covers an odour, it does not neutralise it, and no setting makes up for a forgotten bag or a blocked ventilation outlet. Under 10 m², intensity I is enough; from 100 m² you start on II.

Reversing that order is the most common mistake: you scent first, the odour returns as soon as the source gets the upper hand, and you raise the intensity instead of looking for the cause. Once the source is dealt with and the air renewed, diffusion holds the result instead of masking it, and the setting can even come back down.

If your commercial space fits within 100 m² and closes every weekend, the PURRA X300S is the model that restarts on its own before opening.
