Diffuser with no mist: 6 points to check
A diffuser with no mist is checked in six points, in the order the PURRA care manual has you run through them, from switching on to the cycle pause. None of them calls for a tool or for dismantling. The fourth, the fragrance level in the bottle, is settled by pouring in a Signature Refill 100 ml.
Cold nebulisation is a process that sprays the concentrated fragrance into micro-droplets, without water and without heating. These six points are ordered by the manual's checking sequence, not by frequency: PURRA measures no failure frequency.
A pump draws the fragrance up through a tube, sends it to the nebulisation head and pushes it out of the top of the device. Absent mist therefore means that one link in this circuit is broken, not that the device is beyond use. The mechanism is set out in detail in our article on how a cold nebulisation diffuser works.

Switching on and the touch base
A silent diffuser is first of all a diffuser you believe is on. Check that the touch base is lit, then restart from the device itself rather than from the remote control. On the PURRA X300S, the remote's on and off key drives the same circuit, and one unintended press is enough to cut everything.
A power cut leaves the device off without saying so. A battery down to zero does the same thing, silently. After switching on, let a minute pass before judging: the circuit has to prime, and the first mist does not come out in the same second.
The marker is simple. As long as the base answers no touch at all, the problem sits upstream of the fragrance, and there is no point unscrewing anything.
Battery charge or mains power
An empty battery stops nebulisation before any other symptom. Plug the device in over USB-C and leave it a few minutes before concluding. On a full charge, a cordless diffuser with a 10,000 mAh battery states 293 operating hours on intensity I, around 36 days on a basis of 8 hours of diffusion per day.
These values are stated by the manufacturer. They fall to 146 hours on intensity II and 88 hours on intensity III, around 18 and 11 days on that same basis of 8 hours of diffusion per day. A full charge takes about 6 hours.
The device diffuses while it is plugged in. In a fixed spot, leaving it on mains power removes this point from the list altogether, and it is the simplest setting to hold over time.
The bottle screwed down to the stop
A bottle poorly tightened on the nebulisation head produces no mist: the circuit loses its seal and the pump works on nothing. Switch the device off, open the hatch, unscrew, then screw back by hand to the stop before closing. A missing quarter turn is enough to stop everything.
The move is made with the device off, after two minutes of waiting so the fragrance left in the head can fall back. A drip on the thread is wiped with a soft cloth, with no household product.
The internal aluminium bottle is not packaging. It is a reusable container, sized for the PURRA Signature Refill 100 ml, which unscrews, rinses and refills. It is not thrown away, and it is also what the cleaning cycle uses.
Two formats, two refilling moves

The fragrance level in the bottle
An empty bottle gives nothing, and aluminium shows nothing from the outside. Unscrew it and look. A PURRA Signature Refill 100 ml runs for 625 operating hours on intensity I, around 78 days on a basis of 8 hours of diffusion per day.
On intensity II the same refill gives 400 operating hours, around 50 days on that basis of 8 hours of diffusion per day, and 200 hours on intensity III, around 25 days on the same basis. A device pushed to maximum from the first day therefore empties three times faster than on the gentle setting.
Refilling is done with the device off, without exceeding the bottle's capacity, then screwing back to the stop. Pour in a 100 ml scent refill rather than another liquid: water and household solvents have no place in this circuit.
The white transport part
A white plastic part is fitted at the factory behind the hatch, where the bottle sits: it closes the circuit so the fragrance does not run into the column during transport. As long as it is in place, no mist comes out. It is removed before the first start-up.
This point does not only concern new devices. The part goes back in for every move, every shipment and every return to service: switch off, empty the bottle, wipe the nebulisation head, refit the part, close the hatch and carry the column upright.
It is also what catches out a device given as a host gift and switched on the same evening, the manual still in the box. Do not throw it away: keep it with the packaging.
The cycle pause under way
An absence of mist over a few minutes is not a fault. Diffusion is intermittent by design: on intensity I the device releases 15 seconds of mist, then observes 200 seconds of pause, more than three minutes with nothing coming out. Wait for a full cycle before concluding.
The pause falls to 100 seconds on intensity II and 60 seconds on intensity III. What the pause does not do is weaken the result: continuous diffusion ends up not being perceived at all, whereas diffusion in cycles stays noticeable each time someone walks into the room.

Frequently asked questions
Why has my diffuser's mist become weak or irregular?
Weak or irregular mist points to a circuit that needs cleaning rather than a fault. The care cycle is run with the internal bottle: 2 to 3 ml of 70 % isopropyl alcohol, screwed onto the nebulisation head, then 5 to 8 minutes of operation on intensity III, in a ventilated room.
Also check the seal on the nebulisation head, because a deformed or split seal lets fragrance escape and makes the mist drop. The cycle starts with the device off, away from any flame, without inhaling the mist, and never in a closed cabin. A complete cleaning of the circuit is repeated at every change of scent.
The mist comes out but the scent does not carry past the room, do I need a second device?
If the mist comes out and the scent does not leave the room, the problem is the volume to cover or a draught, not the device. A home fragrance diffuser covers 10 sq m in the portable format and 100 sq m as a column: beyond that, a second device beats an intensity pushed to maximum.
Mist crosses neither a floor, nor a closed door, nor a long corridor. First move the device away from a ventilation outlet and go up one intensity step, then repeat the test by asking someone coming in from outside. If the answer stays no, it is a question of coverage: fragrancing a house on two floors calls for one device per level.
Should you switch off your diffuser before unscrewing the bottle?
Yes, always. Switch the device off and wait two minutes before opening the hatch: the fragrance left in the nebulisation head has to fall back, otherwise it runs onto the thread and into the column. The bottle then unscrews anticlockwise, by hand.
The same order applies to the care cycle and to transport. A bottle unscrewed on a device still running puts the pump out of prime and the circuit fills with air. Refill without exceeding the capacity, screw back to the stop, wipe any drips with a soft cloth, then close up: the device runs with the hatch shut.
Does the seal on a diffuser's nebulisation head wear out?
Yes. The seal provides the tightness between the bottle and the nebulisation head, and it is what holds the pump's pressure. It is checked at every care cycle: supple, seated, neither deformed nor split. A tired seal lets fragrance escape and makes the mist drop.
The visible sign is a drip on the bottle's thread, or a strong scent at the base of the device while the mist itself has weakened. Nothing is taken apart beyond that check: a device opened by its owner falls outside the scope of conformity. When in doubt, customer service settles it better than dismantling.
Is a diffuser that switches off on its own faulty?
Not necessarily: a clean stop after a round length of time comes from the timer. The PURRA X300S offers four timer settings, 1 h, 2 h, 4 h and 8 h, and stops on its own at the end while keeping the chosen intensity. A time slot programmed from the app produces the same effect.
The difference from a real fault shows at restart: if the device picks up immediately on a command, it was a timer that had run out. The app, currently being published, drives intensity and time slots day by day, and a slot that ends cuts diffusion without signalling anything on the device.
Should you buy a new diffuser when it no longer produces mist?
Not before running through the six checking points, which call for neither a tool nor a spare part. A device covered by the 2-year legal guarantee of conformity, bought at a distance with a 14-day right of withdrawal, is diagnosed before it is replaced.
An empty bottle, a bottle poorly tightened or a forgotten transport part are not faults of the device, and none of them is settled by buying a new column. A refill is bought directly from the brand, in a 100 ml aluminium canister or a 10 ml bottle depending on the device. Allow dispatch within 24 to 48 h, free delivery from €49 in mainland France, Switzerland and Monaco, and a return possible within 14 days.
